Once upon a time there was an old woman.
She lived in a cottage with her son.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s1_1.mp3
His name was Lazy.
Every day the woman worked very hard spinning wool.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s1_2.mp3
And every day her son sat by the fireplace and did nothing.
Which is why he was called Lazybones.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s1_3.mp3
One day his mother got tired of this and said,
- You have to find a job.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s1_4.mp3
- I am tired of you doing nothing all day.
Lazy went to a farmer, who lived nearby.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s1_5.mp3
He worked for him for one day.
When he finished, the farmer gave him a penny.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s1_6.mp3
Lazy had never had money before.
On his way home he lost the penny in the stream.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s1_7.mp3
- You silly boy, said his mother.
- You should have put it in your pocket.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s2_1.mp3
- I will do that next time, Lazy said.
Next day Lazy worked for another farmer.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s2_2.mp3
He lived on the other side of the hill.
When he finished the farmer gave him a pitcher of milk.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s2_3.mp3
Lazy remember what his mother had said.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s2_4.mp3
He tried to put the pitcher in his pocket.
Of course he spilt all the milk.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s3_1.mp3
When he got home the pitcher was empty.
- What? said his mother.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s3_2.mp3
- You should have carried it on you head.
- I will do that next time, Lazy said.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s3_3.mp3
Next day Lazy worked for the same farmer.
He got some butter for his work.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s3_4.mp3
Lazy remembered what his mother had said.
He put the butter on his head and went home.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s4_1.mp3
But the butter melted and ran down the side of his face.
Lazy only got a dirty face for his work.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s4_2.mp3
- You fool, said his mother.
- You should have wrapped the butter in some green leaves.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s4_3.mp3
- I will do that next time, Lazy said.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s4_4.mp3
Next day Lazy got a cat for his work.
Lazy tried to wrap it in green leaves.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s5_1.mp3
But the cat did not like that.
So it ran away.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s5_2.mp3
Lazy came home with scratched fingers.
- You fool, said his mother.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s5_3.mp3
- You should have tied a piece of string
around its neck.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s5_4.mp3
- Then you could have pulled it home.
- I will do that next time, Lazy said.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s5_5.mp3
Next day Lazy got a juicy ham for his work.
Lazy remembered what his mother had said.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s6_1.mp3
He tied a piece of string around it.
Then he pulled it home.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s6_2.mp3
The juicy ham was ruined.
- You fool, said his mother.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s6_3.mp3
- You should have carried it on your shoulders.
- I will do that next time, Lazy said.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s6_4.mp3
Next day Lazy got a mule for his work.
He put it on his shoulders. Then he went home.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s7_1.mp3
On the way Lazy passed a beautiful house.
A rich man lived here with his beautiful daughter.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s7_2.mp3
But the beautiful girl was deaf and dumb.
The only thing that could cure her was if she laughed.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s7_3.mp3
That was what the doctor had said.
But there was nothing that could make her laugh.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s7_4.mp3
That afternoon the girl sat by the window.
She was looking out the window and was very sad.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s8_1.mp3
Suddenly she saw something strange.
She had never seen anything like it.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s8_2.mp3
Lazy was carrying a mule on his shoulders.
The poor animal lay there with its legs in the air.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s8_3.mp3
The mule screamed and kicked violently.
Lazy was having trouble holding it.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s8_4.mp3
The girl looked. She looked again.
Then she started to laugh.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s9_1.mp3
- Dad, shouted the girl.
- Dad come and see!
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s9_2.mp3
- My girl, said the old man.
- Is that your voice?
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s9_3.mp3
- Yes, shouted the girl and laughed.
- Come and see!
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s9_4.mp3
The girl was cured. The old man was very happy.
He ran out into the road.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s9_5.mp3
The man shouted to Lazy,
- Put the mule down.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s10_1.mp3
You have given my daughter her sight and hearing back.
You are going to be her husband.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s10_2.mp3
Lazy was married to his daughter.
And he was never called Lazybones again.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s10_3.mp3
They moved into a fine new house.
Lazy’s mother moved in with them.
book_data/lazybones/lyd/s10_4.mp3
The old man often came and visited them.
And they all lived happily ever after.
